The Add-On Licensure in Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program provides students who already possess a North Carolina teaching license in another area with professional preparation and training in the education of Deaf and hard-of-hearing students.

The program will lead to the North Carolina License in Deaf and Hard of Hearing K-12.

Deaf and hard of hearing Program Distinctions

The Student Experience in deaf and hard of hearing licensure

Students will take the following classes to earn this add-on license: Language Teaching Methods with Deaf Students, Bilingual Methods for Teaching Deaf Students, Literacy Methods with Deaf Learners, and Instructional Methods: Students with Hearing Loss. As a prerequisite, they will take Introduction to Audiology.

Additionally, students may choose to take:

  • Structure of English & ASL
  • Instructional ASL for Educating Deaf Students
  • Spoken Language Facilitation in Deaf Children
  • Visual English Systems

Students must already having a North Carolina teaching license in another area and have completed at least two years of teaching experience.

After completing your licensure in deaf and hard of hearing

Successful completion of this program will allow students to be better prepared to work with Deaf and hard-of-hearing students.
