UNC Greensboro’s Add-On Licensure in Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing program provides students who already possess a North Carolina teaching license in another area with professional preparation and training in the education of Deaf and hard-of-hearing students.

The program leads to the North Carolina License in Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing K-12. With this, teachers will be able to foster healthy learning and social environments for all their students. Along with the option to complete American Sign Language (ASL) courses at UNCG, they will learn about alternative visual and tactile learning methods.

Deaf and hard-of-hearing Program Distinctions

Students earning their licensure in Deaf and hard-of-hearing work with world-renowned faculty and staff. They bring extensive experience from the field as teachers, researchers, and leaders.

They work closely with Department of Interpreting, Deaf Education, and Advocacy Services (IDEAS), the only undergraduate program of its kind in the southeastern United States. UNCG has been preparing Deaf education professionals for over 50 years.

Accreditations and affiliations for the program include:

• National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE)
• N.C. Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI)

The Student Experience in deaf and hard-of-hearing licensure

The Deaf and hard-of-hearing add-on licensure gives teachers the tools to build a supportive classroom structure. To ensure this, they will take the following classes:

• Language Teaching Methods with Deaf Students
• Bilingual Methods for Teaching Deaf Students
• Literacy Methods with Deaf Learners
• Instructional Methods: Students with Hearing Loss
• Introduction to Audiology

Additionally, students may choose to take:

• Structure of English & ASL
• Instructional ASL for Educating Deaf Students
• Spoken Language Facilitation in Deaf Children
• Visual English Systems

Students must already have a North Carolina teaching license in another area and have completed at least two years of teaching experience.

After completing your licensure in deaf and hard of hearing

Successful completion of the program will allow teachers to be better prepared working with Deaf and hard-of-hearing students. The add-on licensure supplements teachers’ master’s degrees so they can properly support children with the resources they need to excel. Combined with a master’s degree, this licensure sets up teachers for more specialized or administrative roles within their school system, including teacher training or policy development.

With the licensure, teachers will be able to foster healthy learning and social environments for all their students. They will be able to introduce improved communication tools in their classes. They will be able to provide accessible teaching materials and classroom structure for students who are Deaf, hard-of-hearing, or experiencing hearing loss.
