Candidates in the Elementary Mathematics Add-on Licensure Program will meet standards and competencies through successful completion of six mathematics education courses.

Through this 100% online program, they will be ready to teach number systems, rational numbers, geometry, data analysis, modeling, and algebraic reasoning in K-5 classrooms. The courses reflect the North Carolina State Board of Education’s requirements for the elementary mathematics specialist license.

Who Can Earn An Online Add-on licensure in elementary mathematics

Alternative licensure programs, also known as lateral entry, are for teachers who already have their undergraduate degree. Though they do not hold a teaching license, they currently teach full-time in a K-12 school. In many cases, candidates can achieve a master’s degree with limited additional coursework.

The NC Board of Education offers 10 Professional Educator’s Licenses for working with Birth-6 children in public schools. Two add-ons — elementary mathematics and elementary science — can be earned through educator preparation programs offered by approved state universities such as UNC Greensboro.

The Student Experience in licensure in elementary mathematics

The Elementary Mathematics Add-On Licensure connects teachers of all grades with outstanding faculty mentors in the Department of Teacher Education and Higher Education. Together, they will pursue one, common goal: to become leaders driven to make a difference in the lives of learners.

  • Students in the add-on licensure program will complete 18 credit hours on teaching six grade school mathematical concepts. With each course, they will strengthen their understanding of classroom leadership, student interactions, and elementary-age reasoning.
  • Graduate students in the School of Education benefit from hands-on learning woven throughout programs and co-curricular opportunities.
  • Students interested in research may work alongside faculty members on cutting-edge studies and innovation projects. They will gain first-hand experience in discovering solutions to pressing social and educational issues.

After receiving your add-on licensure in elementary mathematics

Graduates of UNC Greensboro’s online add-on licensure go on to offer more advanced mathematical methodologies to their elementary students. Others go on to become curriculum facilitators or school system mathematics coaches.

The U.S. Department of Education requires that all higher education institutions advise students as to whether their curriculum provides them with the eligibility to apply for a professional license and/or certification in the state for which they plan to practice. As such, please review UNC Greensboro’s status by state for the initial teaching license. You should note whether the program either “meets”, “does not meet”, or if there “has not been a determination” of the program’s status in the state for which you plan to practice.
