Candidates in the Elementary Science Add-on Licensure program will complete 15 credit hours online, elevating their knowledge in physical sciences, earth and space sciences, life sciences, and other subjects for elementary-level comprehension.

Once they meet standards and competencies through successful completion of all courses, they will receive a K-6 add-on licensure in science. This fulfills the requirements of the North Carolina State Board of Education.

Who Can Earn An Online Add-on licensure in elementary Science

Applicants for the online Elementary Science Add-on Licensure should hold an elementary teaching license. They should have taught for at least two years.

Alternative licensure programs, also known as lateral entry, are for teachers who already have their undergraduate degree and teach full-time in a K-12 school. Many of them can achieve a master’s degree with limited additional coursework.

This add-on licensure — one of two earned through educator preparation programs at approved state universities such as UNC Greensboro — fulfills the requirements of the NC Board of Education.

The Online elementary science add-on licensure Student Experience

To earn the add-on licensure, students will complete five science education courses:

  • Nature of Science, Technology, and Society
  • Teaching Life Sciences
  • Teaching Physical Sciences
  • Teaching Earth Sciences
  • Science Education: Teaching Practice and Curriculum

After receiving your elementary science add-on licensure

Graduates with their add-on elementary science licensure can offer more advanced methodologies to their elementary students in science and serve as teacher leaders in their schools. Others go on to become curriculum facilitators or school system science coaches.

Earning Licensure While Living Outside North Carolina

Currently, UNC Greensboro is authorized to offer online education in all 50 states and Puerto Rico. State Authorization regulates in which states colleges and universities can offer education. UNC Greensboro does not guarantee that programs which fulfill North Carolina licensure requirements will satisfy the criteria of professional licensure boards in other states or territories.
