Bachelor's in Dance Studies - K-12 Teacher Licensure

The Bachelor of Arts in Dance Studies with K-12 Licensure program at UNC Greensboro prepares prospective dance teachers for careers as highly skilled dancers and choreographers, as well as educators, able to meet the varied needs of students of all grades and ages. Our approach to dance education emphasizes creative and critical thinking abilities, artistry, kinesthetic expression, and connection to community. The BA in Dance Studies with K-12 Teaching Licensure is the only program in the UNC System in which graduate students with initial Dance K-12 teaching licensure can earn advanced dance teacher licensure. 

Bachelor’s in Dance Studies Program Distinctions

UNCG’s School of Dance faculty, 50% who are faculty of color, are active professionals in the dance field. Professor Robin Gee curates the annual Greensboro Dance Film Festival and also curates national and international Dance Film festivals.  Associate Professor B.J. Sullivan is known internationally for her Safety Technique dance technique. Other Dance faculty bring professional experience and innovative pedagogical approaches that reflect the depth and breadth of School of Dance faculty expertise.

  • Facilities include seven studios, a fully-equipped dance theater, a screen dance editing classroom, dressing rooms, and an interior garden courtyard reserved for dance students.

The Dance Education Student Experience

BA in Dance Studies students can participate in 10-12 concerts a year, with opportunities for performance and choreography. Dancers have additional opportunities through the student organization Prime Movers and Delta Chi Xi Honorary Dance Fraternity.

Students gain real-world experience through internship opportunities and study abroad programs in Australia, China, South Africa, Italy, and London.

Visiting artists connect students to the profession. Recent guests include: Camille A. Brown, Kristin Daniel, Gerri Houlihan, Juel D. Lane, Helen Simoneau, and Maleek Washington.

After Graduating with your Dance Teaching Degree

Upon successful completion of the UNCG undergraduate coursework dance education students will be eligible for initial certification as a teacher of dance in all grades. Career options include performance and choreography positions, as well as arts administration and teaching in a school or community setting.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Bachelor’s in Dance Studies

Yes the UNCG School of Dance requires an audition to evaluate technique, performance quality, and artistry. The school holds auditions once per semester, and there is a fee to register. Auditions are not require for dance minors.

BA students can add NC K-12 Standard Professional I Licensure to their program, though additional courses are required that focus on pedagogy, curriculum planning, and a student teaching component. You should work closely with your advisor early on to map out your specific course of study.

Graduating with both a BA and a teaching license offers unparalleled career flexibility. You are fully prepared to audition and perform professionally, start your own dance company, or step immediately into a licensed teaching position in the public school system. It also sets you up for careers in arts administration, Pilates instruction, or dance therapy.
