The Master’s in Kinesiology-Human Movement Science Program at UNCG is for students seeking advanced expertise in biomechanics and motor behavior. The program emphasizes rigorous research, requiring all students to complete a thesis.

The thesis program focuses on applied neuromechanics and integrates knowledge from biomechanics, motor behavior, sports medicine, and athletic training. This collaborative approach prepares students–as practitioners, researchers, or educators–to reduce injury risk, restore function after an injury or illness, and enhance health and performance in physically active individuals of all ages.

The Department of Kinesiology has been a cornerstone of the University for more than a century. It began as the Department of Physiology and Physical Culture in the Woman’s College in 1892. When it started, it championed the then-progressive belief that physical active was essential for women’s health and wellness. As the department evolved with the University, the name changed, but the commitment to promoting physical health education and instruction remains at the heart of our mission.

The Master’s in Kinesiology-Human Movement Science Program offers students the opportunity to engage in hands-on research in one of three labs:

• Motor Behavior Laboratory (MB Lab)
• Balance and Training Lab (BAT Lab)
• Applied Neuromechanics Research Lab (ANRL)

The Human Movement Science Student Experience

The Department of Kinesiology emphasizes hands-on, experiential learning through research, practicums, and practical experiences on and off-campus. We regularly collaborate with community organizations to provide a real-world experience and foster relationships that help students grow into well-rounded professionals.

Students in the Master’s Human Movement Science Program will be engaged in an interdisciplinary approach, paired with hands-on research or a clinical experience. Together, this equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive after graduation. Students must complete a thesis grounded in laboratory-based or applied research.
