Master of Arts in Teaching - Secondary English Education

The Master’s in Secondary English Education combines specialized training in literacy and English language arts instruction with extensive classroom experience in local high schools. Through coursework focused on adolescent literacy, writing instruction, youth literacies, and innovative teaching practices, students learn how to engage learners while building strong foundations in literature, language, and composition. This program leads to both initial teacher licensure and a master’s degree. It is designed for students who have a bachelor’s degree, but did not pursue teacher education or licensure as an undergraduate.

The Experience for SECONDARY ENGLISH EDUCATION Students

The MAT program requires the completion of 33 credit hours. During that time, students will complete both an internship and a student teaching placement in local high schools. As part of the curriculum, students will take courses such as Teaching Practices and Curriculum in English, Educational Implications of Learning and Developmental Theory, and Youth Literacies: Advanced Topics in Education.

This sustained clinical experience allows candidates to apply instructional strategies, literacy practices, and classroom management skills in authentic settings before graduation.

UNCG School of Education Scholarships

Each year, the School of Education awards over $1 million in scholarships and graduate assistantships to students.

The Haggai Academy is a scholarship program that provides scholarships of up to $8,000 per year, as well as a wide range of additional enrichment opportunities, for non-traditional students (24 years of age or older) pursuing an initial teacher license.

Graduates of UNCG’s MAT in Secondary English Education program are prepared to earn North Carolina teaching licensure and begin careers as high school English teachers. The program also provides a strong foundation for future leadership roles in curriculum development, instructional coaching, and educational administration.
