Bachelor's in Mathematics

As a graduate of UNCG’s Bachelor’s in Mathematics degree — available as a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) or Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) — you’ll be technically competent and well-grounded in mathematical theory, with strong career prospects in a variety of fields, thanks to our emphasis on undergraduate research opportunities. Both of our Bachelor’s in Mathematics offer the opportunity to pursue our Accelerated Master’s Program (AMP) and earn your Master of Science (M.S.) in Applied Statistics in conjunction with your bachelor’s. You can also pursue Disciplinary Honors in Mathematics.

A bachelor’s degree in mathematics provides a strong foundation in mathematical principles and problem-solving skills that apply across many disciplines.

The curriculum includes courses in calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, and advanced topics. These courses not only develop expertise in specific areas of mathematics, but also transferable skills valued in many professions.

Studying mathematics sharpens critical, logical, and abstract thinking. Engaging with complex theories and proofs builds persistence, precision, and the ability to analyze intricate problems.

Through problem-solving, students gain skills in algorithmic reasoning, pattern recognition, quantitative analysis, and optimization. These abilities strengthen both analytical thinking and resilience – key for success in academics and beyond.

By learning to simplify and abstract complex ideas, mathematics empowers students to break down complicated issues into manageable parts, deepening their understanding of the world.

B.S. OR B.A. — WHICH mathematics DEGREE IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Mathematics offers flexibility that makes it ideal for students who wish to pursue minors or two majors. This path is suitable for students interested in applying mathematics to disciplines like Biology, Business, Chemistry, Computer Science, or Economics. It also nicely complements a major in the Arts, Humanities, Languages or Music by adding marketable skills that enhance both creative and technical careers.
.
Our BA in Mathematics offers concentrations in General Mathematics, Health Informatics, and Statistics.

The Bachelor of Science (BS) in Mathematics provides a more rigorous and in-depth approach to mathematical theory and practice. It is well suited to students seeking a deeper specialization in mathematics and serves as a foundation for students who want to pursue a graduate degree in Mathematics.

Both the BA and BS degrees offer the opportunity to participate in the Accelerated Master’s Program (AMP), allowing students to earn a Master of Science (MS) in Applied Statistics in just one additional year.

THE bachelor’s in mathematics STUDENT EXPERIENCE

  • As a mathematics student at UNCG, you can:
    • Learn from faculty who are internationally recognized researchers and dedicated teachers.
    • Benefit from small class sizes and a high faculty-to-major ratio.
    • Participate in undergraduate research with faculty mentors.
    • Gain real world work experience in internships in local industry.
    • Apply for departmental scholarships.
    • Work as a tutor or grader for lower-level math courses.
    • Connect with peers through the Math Club and UNCG’s student chapter of the Association for Women in Mathematics.

Career Paths: AFTER GRADUATion

  • A mathematics degree opens doors to diverse careers. For example, our alumni work as:
    • Actuaries and Financial Analysts, applying math and statistics to assess risk and guide decisions.
    • Data Scientists, analyzing data to uncover insights and make predictions.
    • Math Teachers, educating students at the K–12 or community college level.
    • Programmers and Software Engineers, creating software using mathematical and computational methods.
    • Project Managers, leading initiatives and ensuring goals are met on time and within budget.

A mathematics degree is also an excellent foundation for graduate studies in mathematics, computer science, economics, engineering, and others.  It also prepares well for professional degrees like law and medicine.

Our graduates have gone on to pursue degrees at UNCG, Clemson, Cornell, Elon Law School, Georgia Tech, NC State, Texas A&M, University of Virginia, and others.
