NC TEACH Alternative Licensure for Middle Grades Math

North Carolina Teachers of Excellence for All Children (NC TEACH) focuses on recruiting, training, supporting, and retaining mid-career professionals as they earn teaching licensure in North Carolina. The area of Middle Grades Math certification allows teachers with a residency license teachers to teach grades 6–9 in North Carolina by earning their initial Standard Professional I license.

Alternative licensure appeals to individuals who shift careers after earning an undergraduate degree in another discipline. NC TEACH allows them to enter the classroom right away, applying their subject knowledge for up to three years while finishing all requirements for a permanent teaching license.

UNC Greensboro’s NC TEACH program combines practical classroom experience with coursework in middle grade mathematical subjects and instruction in educational theory, so they can manage classrooms effectively.

The middle grades math licensure Student Experience

Teachers who enroll in NC TEACH’s Middle Grades Math licensure receive engage in seminars, coursework, coaching sessions, and observations by UNC Greensboro mentors and faculty members. Many teachers already work full-time, and the classwork accommodates them with mostly-online sessions outside regular school hours.

They complete 18 credit hours on literacy in the content area, middle grade mathematics subjects, educational theory, and clinical practice.

• Participants meet regularly with their mentor to provide feedback, formal and informal coaching sessions, and reflection assignments.
• Mentors will also manage school-based concerns such as scheduling and instructional support.
• UNCG supervisors serve as liaisons to the candidate’s partner schools.

After Graduating with your middle grades math licensure

Completing NC TEACH’s Middle Grade licensure program allows graduates to qualify for North Carolina’s initial standard professional I license. With this, they may teach in any middle school classroom in a public school. Candidates may also earn a master’s degree with limited additional coursework.

The U.S. Department of Education requires that all higher education institutions advise students as to whether their curriculum provides them with the eligibility to apply for a professional license and/or certification in the state for which they plan to practice. Funding and Scholarships While Getting Licensure

Each year, the School of Education awards over $1 million in scholarships and graduate assistantships to students.

The Haggai Academy is a scholarship program that provides scholarships of up to $8,000 per year, as well as a wide range of additional enrichment opportunities, for non-traditional students (24 years of age or older) pursuing an initial teacher license.
