NC TEACH Alternative Licensure for High School Math (9-12)

The North Carolina Teachers of Excellence for All Children (NC TEACH) licensure in secondary math equips teachers with their residency license to become fully licensed teachers. The Secondary Mathematics (9-12) certification area is designed to offer a foundation in high school mathematical content for those with North Carolina’s residency license.

UNC Greensboro’s program is an appropriate match for working teachers looking to complete North Carolina’s standard teaching license. They will develop skills in how to effectively teach math subjects in 9th-12th grade classrooms. They will feel empowered to teach high schoolers how to problem solve and explain their reasoning.

The NC TEACH Secondary Math Program Distinctions

The signature course, TED 558 – Middle and Secondary Mathematics Education, focuses on how to teach mathematics effectively rather than simply mastering mathematical content. Candidates learn instructional strategies that foster conceptual understanding, mathematical discourse, and real-world problem solving in secondary classrooms.

The NC TEACH Secondary Math Licensure Student Experience at UNCG

Students in the NC TEACH licensure program for high school math gain field-based experiences as residency license teachers in local public school systems. 

Teachers learn classroom strategies to help high school students pass their math courses. Coursework helps them pass on knowledge in standard 9-12 mathematical requirements. These include numbers and quantities, algebra, geometry, graphs and tables, statistics and probability, and mathematical models.

Participants work with UNC Greensboro faculty exports who mentor them on best classroom practices. Through evaluations and reflective conversations, they learn how to teach youth how to think. At the end of the coursework, they will be able to demonstrate problem-solving, repeated reasoning, and mathematical tool functions.

Funding and Scholarships While Getting Licensure

Each year, the School of Education awards over $1 million in scholarships and graduate assistantships to students.

The Haggai Academy is a scholarship program that provides scholarships of up to $8,000 per year, as well as a wide range of additional enrichment opportunities, for non-traditional students (24 years of age or older) pursuing an initial teacher license.

After Graduating with Secondary Math Education Alternative Licensure

At the end of the NC TEACH high school math licensure program, teachers earn North Carolina’s initial standard professional I license. Having met state requirements, they may continue their work in high school classrooms. The program qualifies them to work in any of the state’s public school systems.

After graduation, some participants choose to work in higher education or administrative roles. Many of them provide training to other pre-service or inservice teachers.

The U.S. Department of Education requires that all higher education institutions advise students as to whether their curriculum provides them with the eligibility to apply for a professional license and/or certification in the state for which they plan to practice.
