Bachelor's in Liberal and Interdisciplinary Studies - Asian Studies

Explore the peoples, cultures, and global influence of Asia through UNC Greensboro’s Asian Studies concentration. Examine the histories, religions, politics, and societies of East, Southeast, and South Asia while exploring the region’s rich traditions through art, literature, film, and music. The Asian Studies concentration is one of six concentrations available through the International and Global Studies (IGS) program. Our interdisciplinary, liberal arts approach promotes skills in research, critical thinking, and communication that ensure students can analyze, evaluate, and express positions on international and global issues and the complexity and interconnectedness of world regions and populations.

The Asian Studies Concentration Highlights

• Explore Asia through an interdisciplinary lens. Study the histories, cultures, religions, political systems, economies, and societies of East, Southeast, and South Asia while gaining a deeper understanding of the region’s diversity and global influence.
• Examine one of the world’s most dynamic and influential regions. Analyze contemporary issues such as economic development, international relations, migration, environmental sustainability, cultural exchange, and geopolitical change.
• Develop regional expertise and intercultural skills. Strengthen your research, communication, critical thinking, and cross-cultural understanding while engaging with diverse perspectives, traditions, and experiences.
• Customize your studies across disciplines. Build a broad understanding of Asia through coursework in history, political science, geography, religion, economics, languages, literature, art, film, anthropology, and cultural studies. Courses span more than 30 departments and programs across campus.
• Join a program committed to global engagement. Enhance your education through internationally focused coursework, leadership opportunities, language study, and experiences that prepare you to live and work in an increasingly interconnected world.

The Asian Studies student experience

• Tackle complex global issues with focused problem-solving strategies. Examine pressing international challenges through an interdisciplinary lens. Learn to develop thoughtful solutions for dynamic global communities.
• Design a focused capstone project. Conduct original research on an Asian Studies topic of your choice, with guidance from faculty members. Showcase your analytical and critical writing skills before graduation.
• Build vital intercultural competence through immersive study abroad experiences. Travel abroad to deepen your understanding of Asian societies. Gain real-world global perspectives while completing degree credits.
• Master a regional language through upper-level foreign language coursework. Complete at least six credits of advanced language instruction. Enhance your cross-cultural communication abilities for international careers.
