Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, P.B.C.

The interdisciplinary post-baccalaureate certificate (PBC) in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) at UNC Greensboro enhances a graduate degree in disciplines as diverse as Nursing, History, English, Languages, Performing Arts, Communication Studies, Education, Sociology, Social Work, and Kinesiology.

This program may also serve as a stand-alone certificate to augment the qualifications of currently employed teachers, public servants, business people, and others. Some students use the PBC as a springboard to a Master of Arts degree in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.

Program Distinctions

Building upon UNCG’s historical mission as the Woman’s College of North Carolina, we established one of the earliest WGSS programs in the country.

Application

Apply for the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies through The Graduate School’s online application system.

In addition to your online application, you need to submit the following:

Graduate School Requirements:
  • Application processing fee (currently $65). If you are applying for the PBC in WGSS at the same time as you are applying to a graduate program (MA, PhD, or other) in another department, you only need to pay one fee. If you apply to the PBC in WGSS later, you will have to pay an additional application fee.
  • Official transcripts from prior colleges and universities.
  • Three recommendations from professors (preferred) or employers.

If you have recently applied to a graduate program in another department, you should be able to use the transcripts and letters from that application for your PBC application. The letters must be less than one year old, or the Graduate School will need to e-mail the recommenders to ask permission to re-use them. Contact our admissions specialist in the graduate school to arrange this.  At least one of your letters should specifically address your interest and experience in WGSS.

Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Additional Requirement:
  • A personal statement explaining how the WGSS Post-Baccalaureate Certificate program comports with your personal, academic, and/or professional experience and goals.

The deadline to apply for Fall is May 15. The application must be completed, application fee must be paid, and all supporting documents must be submitted by May 15 for your application to be considered for Fall; WGSS cannot view your application or make an admission decision until your application is complete and the processing fee has been paid.

If you have missed the May 15 deadline, you may apply for Spring. The deadline for Spring will be October 1.

The Student Experience

Courses offered by WGSS and other outstanding faculty across the university provide opportunities for students to engage in varied modes of inquiry on issues of local, national, and international importance.

After Graduation

Career examples include: Education, Publishing and Editing, and Foundations and Nonprofits.
