The Ph.D in psychology is one of the oldest doctoral programs at UNCG with a history of preparing graduates to be clinical, research, and educational leaders in the field. Psychology PhD students follow a single curriculum with a uniform set of requirements, but their research programs and seminar courses focus on their unique areas of interest.

Psychology PhD PROGRAM DISTINCTIONS

As one of the oldest doctoral degree programs at UNCG, the psychology Ph.D. program is known for its rigorous research and clinical training. The Department of Psychology is revered for its facilities and access to research instruments, as well as its hands-on clinical opportunities, and faculty with long-standing tenure in the program.

Equipment facilities include:

• 3T scanner (Siemens Magnetom Trio)
• 64-channel ERP system (Brain Products: actiCHamp and actiCap active electrodes system)
• remote eye tracking system (SensoMotoric Products)

Methods training include:

• experimental design
• experience and thought sampling
• protocol analysis
• eye-tracking and pupillometry
• psychometrics

THE Psychology pdh STUDENT EXPERIENCE

Because the psychology graduate program is small, each student’s course of study can be tailored to meet their individual interests and needs. Students receive extensive one-on-one mentoring from a faculty advisor and collaborate with many faculty and students to develop research skills in their chosen concentration. Funding for psychology Ph.D. students at UNCG is strong, with candidates typically receiving five years of funding, including tuition remission. Opportunities for hands-on clinical experience is also ideal at UNCG.

• Ph.D. candidates gain experience in clinical settings through the department’s Psychology Clinic, which is a nonprofit offering affordable mental health services to community members.
• The Psychology Clinic manages Dream Camp, a unique camp that serves youth on the autism spectrum every summer. As Dream Camp interns, Ph.D. students gain clinical experience and program development skills.
