a large globe
Students from all over the world come together to celebrate International Education Week (IEW). IEW is a joint initiative of the US Dept of State and US Department of Education to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn and exchange experiences.

As UNC Greensboro’s global engagement continues to expand, faculty and staff members are traveling around the world to conduct research, develop partnerships, attend conferences, lead projects, and represent UNCG on an international stage.

To better support employees traveling abroad on official University business, UNCG’s Global Engagement Office, Office of Research Compliance and Integrity, and The Controller’s Office have introduced a new international travel registry. The streamlined process helps travelers complete important safety and compliance requirements and access assistance before, during, and after an international trip.

“The travel registry is about support, safety, and preparedness,” says Denise Bellamy, senior director of global engagement for UNCG. “It helps the university provide assistance before, during, and after international travel while ensuring important requirements are addressed in a single process.”

Who is UNCG’s international travel registry for?

The employee travel registry is specifically for faculty and staff traveling internationally on official university business.

The process does not replace existing student travel registration procedures. Student international travel continues to follow established study abroad and faculty-led program processes.

Why does UNCG need an international travel registry?

The registry gives UNCG the information needed to support employees throughout international travel and respond quickly during an emergency It allows the University to coordinate with GeoBlue Business Insurance and Crisis24 to provide support in case of natural disaster, political unrest, severe weather, a medical emergency, or another unexpected situation while abroad. Think of it as a safety net.

40 Departments/offices

How does registering travel help keep faculty and staff safe?

The registry helps UNCG address several important considerations associated with international travel:

  • Traveler health and safety
  • Emergency response
  • Export controls and sanctions
  • Institutional liability
  • Regulatory compliance
  • Crisis management

The registry helps ensure that UNCG can fulfill its responsibilities while continuing to support the global activities that are central to the University’s mission.

When international events occur, universities have a responsibility to determine whether members of their community may be affected. The travel registry gives UNCG the information needed to quickly identify travelers who may be in affected locations and connect them with assistance when needed.

Whether it’s a transportation disruption, civil unrest, natural disaster, or health emergency, timely information can make a significant difference.

What travel assistance is available to registered employees?

As part of the registration process, travelers are connected to the UNC System-approved international travel assistance and emergency response program. This service provides access to resources and support that can be critical when dealing with unexpected incidents overseas.

The goal is simple: ensure that UNCG faculty and staff have access to assistance when they need it most.

When should I complete the international travel registration?

Register your travel using the Travel Registry below no later than four (4) weeks prior to departure.

How do I complete the international travel registration process?

1. Complete a pre-travel authorization in Emburse and indicate that the trip is international.

2. Follow the prompt to complete the international travel registry through the Global Engagement Office.

3. GEO reviews the traveler and destination information.

4. The Office of Research Compliance and Integrity reviews relevant export control and compliance considerations.

5. After both reviews are complete, GEO approves the travel authorization in Emburse.

6. If additional information or action is needed, GEO or ORCI contacts the traveler directly.

What are the benefits of completing the travel registry?

Completing the travel registry takes only a short time, but it provides important benefits:

  • Access to travel assistance resources
  • Emergency support
  • Improved communication during international incidents
  • Compliance review before departure
  • Greater peace of mind for travelers and the University

Most importantly, it helps ensure that UNCG is prepared to support its faculty and staff wherever their work takes them around the world.
