The Bachelor’s in Ancient Mediterranean Studies at UNC Greensboro explores the civilizations, archaeology, languages, and literature of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds. Studying Ancient Mediterranean Studies helps students build strong communication and critical‑thinking skills. Through the program, students are prepared for for the workforce, as well as graduate programs in medicine, law, and other professional fields. Students may choose from four concentrations:

Bachelor’s in Ancient Mediterranean Studies PROGRAM DISTINCTIONS

  • Ancient Mediterranean Studies provides you with hands-on experience that deepens your understanding of ancient Greek and Latin culture and literature. Our program offers undergraduate research opportunities with faculty mentors, as well as opportunities to present at major academic conferences.
  • Explore the classical world in person with a range of immersive study abroad experiences. Highlights include an archaeological field school on the Greek island of Kea and the faculty-led UNCG in Rome program.
  • The Classical Society hosts an annual “Classics Day,” a fall tradition on campus that draws hundreds of students from local high schools to learn about ancient civilizations and compete in events.
  • UNCG’s Bachelor’s in Ancient Mediterranean Studies is the largest undergraduate classical studies program in North Carolina
  • The Department regularly sponsors online and in-person lectures from leading scholars of the study of the Ancient Mediterranean world. 
  • Fun fact: The study of the ancient Mediterranean world at UNCG has been a foundational discipline since the college first opened its doors in 1891. Then, all students studied Greek and Roman history and three years of Latin were required for graduation.

  • The program offers a classical studies library and undergraduate study room, where students gather to study together and support each other.

  • You can join the UNCG Classical Society, a student group that celebrates the study of the ancient Mediterranean world.

AFTER GRADUATIng with your Bachelor’s in Ancient Mediterranean Studies

Ancient Mediterranean Studies prepares students to enter the world and continue their education in graduate programs. Graduates have gone directly into the workforce in business, law, banking, the military, the clergy, teaching Latin, teaching English as a second language, retail management, higher education administration, real estate, and insurance. AFFILIATED MINORS for Ancient Mediterranean Studies Majors

The College of Arts and Sciences offers a minor in Videogaming and Esports that pairs well with this degree. Students complete one required course and 12 hours of electives in courses like Intro to 3D Animation and Fandom and Religion: Rituals, Texts, Communities.
