Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance - Choreography and Performance K-12 Licensure

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance with K-12 Licensure at UNC Greensboro is an intensive, studio-focused undergraduate degree that prepares students for a dual career as a professional dancer/choreographer and a certified public school dance educator. The program includes the studio component and the licensure component.

Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance with K-12 Licensure Program Distinctions

UNCG is the only university in the North Carolina system that offers graduate degrees in Dance, and the only program where graduate students with initial Dance K-12 teaching licensure can earn advanced dance teacher licensure. 

School of Dance faculty, 50% of whom are faculty of color, are active professionals in the dance field. The School is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Dance and affiliated with the American College Dance Association, National DAnce Education Organization, The NC Dance Education Organization and the Dance Studies Association.

Facilities include seven studios, a fully-equipped dance theater, a screen dance editing classroom, dressing rooms, and an interior garden courtyard reserved for dance students. Live accompaniment is provided for many technique classes.

The BFA Student Experience in Dance, K-12 Licensure

Alongside dance courses, students will take classes that cover pedagogy, curriculum design, and student teaching. They will gain hands-on classroom experience in local elementary, middle, or high schools.

  • Students may participate in the Dancers Connect community school and other community arts initiatives including movement analysis workshops, intergenerational dance with senior citizens, and creating and performing lecture demonstrations in schools and community centers.
  • The school produces 10-12 concerts each year with many opportunities for you to perform. Typically, three to four concerts each year showcase undergraduate student choreography.
  • Students have the opportunity to participate in Prime Movers, a social and educational club responsible for annual concerts of student work, and other Dance student groups such as the  Delta Chi Xi Honorary Dance Fraternity.
  • An arts-based living community, “Studio 91” in Cone Residence Hall, features music, theater, and dance practice rooms; music composition computer lab; drawing lounge; and arts-related programs and events.
  • Study abroad opportunities are plentiful, including several semester-long exchange programs that offer strong dance programs, such as the Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts, University of Malta, Zhejiang Conservatory in Hangzhou, China, and the University of Cape Town in South Africa. Faculty also lead study abroad programs in Italy and London.

After Graduating with your BFA in Dance, K-12 Licensure

Upon successful completion of the UNCG undergraduate coursework dance education you will be eligible for initial certification as a teacher of dance in all grades. Career options include performance and choreography positions, as well as arts administration, and teaching in a school or community setting.

Frequently Asked Questions about the BFA in Dance, Choreography and Performance

Yes the UNCG School of Dance requires an audition to evaluate technique, performance quality, and artistry. The school holds auditions once per semester, and there is a fee to register. Auditions are not require for dance minors.

BFA Dance students at UNCG can add NC K-12 Standard Professional I Licensure to their program, though additional courses are required that focus on pedagogy, curriculum planning, and a student teaching component. You should work closely with your advisor early on to map out your specific course of study.
