NC TEACH Alternative Licensure for High School Science Teachers (9-12)

North Carolina Teachers of Excellence for All Children (NC TEACH) Secondary Science (9-12) certification area is designed for those who want to teach in North Carolina schools. This alternative licensure offers residency license teachers a foundation in Science topics alongside effective classroom methods for teaching high school students.

UNC Greensboro’s NC TEACH program helps recruit, train, support, and retain mid-career professionals on the road to becoming licensed teachers. It is popular with teachers who earned their bachelor’s in a different field. Upon completion, teachers will feel ready to foster conceptual understanding and develop scientifically literate students in grades 9-12. Along with content, they will be able to design courses that lay foundational scientific practices and foster curiosity.

The NC TEACH secondary science Program Distinctions

UNC Greensboro’s 18 credit hour alternative licensure program accommodates the needs of working teachers. Classwork, in-field experience, and one-on-one mentoring are set outside their normal school hours. Faculty mentors will track their process with proactive evaluations and conversations.

The secondary science teaching licensure Student Experience

They will complete assignments for three core courses and for three methods and clinical sequences. These include:

• Literacy in the Content Area
• Middle and Secondary Mathematics Education
• Clinical Experience in Teaching

The coursework will prepare them to teach all required scientific topics for secondary education. Teachers will be able to develop courses for biology, chemistry, ecosystems, cellular organisms, energy and environmental science, astronomy, physics, and other key fields.

They will know how to train students using the scientific method, how to collect and analyze data, and how to communicate and collaborate in class projects. Assignments on classroom methodology will help them inspire students to become active participants in scientific learning.

Funding and Scholarships While Getting Licensure

Each year, the School of Education awards over $1 million in scholarships and graduate assistantships to students.

The Haggai Academy is a scholarship program that provides scholarships of up to $8,000 per year, as well as a wide range of additional enrichment opportunities, for non-traditional students (24 years of age or older) pursuing an initial teacher license.

After Graduating with your secondary science education licensure

The NC TEACH alternative licensure for high school science education taught by UNC Greensboro prepares teachers to pass along North Carolina’s Science Standards. Upon completion, they qualify for their standard teaching license. They will be able to teach science classes in North Carolina public high schools.

Some NC TEACH graduates continue with their education to become instructional coaches for other teachers. Candidates may be on their way to completing a master’s with limited additional coursework.
