North Carolina Teachers of Excellence for All Children (NC TEACH) alternative licensure for high school social studies is for those wishing to become licensed teachers in North Carolina. The Secondary Social Studies certification area gives residency license teachers the opportunity to earn an initial standard professional I teaching license.

This program recruits, trains, supports, and retains mid-career professionals on their way to becoming licensed teachers. Alternative licensure is popular with teachers who changed their career path after earning their undergraduate in a different field. NC TEACH ensures they can begin teaching immediately. UNC Greensboro’s program helps them prepare high school-level lessons for understanding of American, North Carolina, and World history.

Why You Should Earn Your secondary social studies licensure With UNCG

Students in the NC TEACH alternative licensure program get educational development courses and field-based experiences. They work with UNC Greensboro faculty and engage with youth in local public school systems. With a residency license, they can use their knowledge of their core subject for up to three years while earning their permanent teaching license.

Teachers in the high school licensure program learn how to apply concepts at a 6-9 grade level. Subjects include geography, global patterns, cultures, civics and government, and economics. They learn to engage high schoolers studying American History, World History, and Civic Literacy. They will develop a framework for students to better understand ancient and contemporary societies.

UNC Greensboro’s alternative licensure program supports working teachers with classes they can take outside regular school hours. They benefit from hands-on learning, evaluations, and conversations with mentors to help them improve their classroom experience.

After Graduating With NC TEACH secondary social studies education licensure

Upon completion of the NC TEACH high school social studies licensure program, graduates will receive their initial standard professional I license. This allows them to continue teaching across North Carolina’s public school systems. Many graduates advance to become college-level instructors or administrators. Others go on to train pre-service or inservice teachers in university teacher educator programs and school district offices.

The U.S. Department of Education requires that all higher education institutions advise students as to whether their curriculum provides them with the eligibility to apply for a professional license and/or certification in the state for which they plan to practice. As such, please review UNC Greensboro’s status by state for the initial teaching license. You should note whether the program either “meets”, “does not meet”, or if there “has not been a determination” of the program’s status in the state for which you plan to practice. Review the Licensure Reciprocity Information.

Funding and Scholarships While Getting Licensure

Each year, the School of Education awards over $1 million in scholarships and graduate assistantships to students.

The Haggai Academy is a scholarship program that provides scholarships of up to $8,000 per year. A wide range of additional enrichment opportunities is available to non-traditional students (24 years of age or older) pursuing an initial teacher license.
