Dr. Diya Abdo (Center for New North Carolinians) received new funding from the New Arrivals Institute for the project “Refugee After School Program.” Natacha Nikokeza is co-principal investigator on the project.
Purpose: Many newly arrived refugee children need additional support and tutoring to achieve success in school. They also need the opportunity to experience activities that they might not otherwise get to experience such as Girl Scouts, sports activities and field trips. Adult refugees need help with employment assistance and English as a Second or Other Language (ESOL).
Objective: To prepare refugee children for success in school and adults for the workforce.
Method: An after-school tutoring program, social enrichment activities, and ESOL and employment readiness are provided at CNNC community centers that provide services to refugees.
