Svi Shapiro received his undergraduate degree from the University of London and graduate degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and Boston University. He came to UNCG in 1980 and has been department chair and coordinator of the PH.D program in education and cultural studies. He was promoted to Professor in 1991. His professional interests include critical and liberatory pedagogies; the moral and spiritual dimensions of education; education and social policy as these relate to social justice, human rights and democracy; global social change and peace education; and qualitative forms of educational inquiry. He is the author or editor of more than 11 books on education. The most recent is Losing Heart; the moral spiritual miseducation of America’s children (Lawrence Erlbaum, 2005). He is presently editing a book of essays that focuses on our vision for education in the 21st century in a time of war, religious conflict, environmental crisis and global inequality. He has also published more than 70 articles in national and international journals. His research interests have taken him to Israel, the UK, Russia, Brazil and South Africa. Svi is also an active member of the larger community. He writes on education matters for the national magazine, Tikkun. He is a member of the advisory board of the Network of Spiritual Progressives and a member of the steering committee of Triangle Tikkun. Svi has been actively engaged in interfaith efforts and has a special interest in the Israel-Palestine conflict. He lives with his wife Sherry in Raleigh. Courses
