Research Interests

My research interests lie chiefly in the history of 20th-century Germany and the Holocaust.

Current Project

Nearing completion of a book on the background to the Holocaust, a retracing of the "twisted road to Auschwitz."

  • HIS 223: Modern Europe - Survey of major socio-economic, political, and cultural trends in Europe from the French Revolution to the present.
  • HIS 375: Germany in the 19th Century, 1800-1914 - Examination of German social and political structures and their functioning between 1800 and outbreak of World War I. Attendant emphasis placed upon cultural and intellectual issues which illuminate German (and European) culture of the nineteenth century.
  • HIS 376: German History, 1914-1945 - German social and political structures and their functioning during World War I, Weimar Republic, and Third Reich with attendant emphasis on cultural and intellectual themes.
  • HIS 392: The Holocaust: History and Meaning - This course examines the history of the Nazi Holocaust during World War II and explores a variety of meanings--intellectual and artistic--that have been imposed upon it.
  • HIS 574: Modern Germany: Selected Topics - "The German-Jewish Relationship – Symbiosis or One-Sided Love Affair?"
  • HIS 711: Explaining the Third Reich
