History of UNCG

UNCG is one of the original three UNC System institutions. From 1891-1963, it was the only public college for women in North Carolina, and one of the premier institutions for women in the country.

Living in Greensboro

Greensboro is a thriving city with a revitalized downtown, an exciting arts and entertainment scene, and a wide variety of parks and recreational activities. And with seven colleges and universities, it’s the perfect place to be a college student.

UNC Greensboro’s mission is to provide access and opportunities to those from North Carolina and beyond and to do so in an inclusive and welcoming environment. As a minority serving institution, UNCG takes pride in providing access and opportunity to individuals from underrepresented and historically marginalized groups. UNCG is committed to both access and excellence, which reflects our mission and values. We meet our dual goals of access and excellence through actualizing our values which include Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. UNCG’s Action framework guides the campus community to real, structural change.

UNCG’s strategic plan – dubbed “Taking Giant Steps” – is anchored by transformation, with three areas of focus: health and wellness, vibrant communities, and global connections.

UNC Greensboro will redefine the public research university for the 21st century as an inclusive, collaborative, and responsive institution making a difference in the lives of students and the communities it serves.
