The biotechnology concentration through UNC Greensboro’s Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Biology is designed for students with a strong interest in molecular biology and genetics. Courses will prepare students in both conceptual aspects of molecular biology and their practical application in biotechnology and genetic engineering.

Bachelor of Science in Biology – Biotechnology PROGRAM DISTINCTIONS

  • Innovative CURE (Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences) Curriculum: As part of a National Science Foundation Study through the Council of Undergraduate Research, the biology department redesigned its curriculum so scientific research is infused into classes from the time students take their first introductory course until they take advanced courses during their final year.
  • Undergraduate Research Opportunities: Students have the opportunity to work with internationally recognized faculty as they conduct research on topics ranging from cell motility, cancer, obesity, the flu, and more.
  • State-of-the-Art Equipment and Facilities: Students have access to the Plant and Pollinator Center, Campus Wetlands, high-powered molecular biology equipment, two large greenhouse facilities, the Confocal Microscopy Facility, and more.

THE Biotechnology STUDENT EXPERIENCE

  • Faculty‑Guided Biotechnology Research: Faculty empower students to engage in undergraduate research projects in both field and laboratory settings.
  • Upper‑level Biotechnology Coursework: The concentration offers advanced courses in virology, microbiology, genomics, molecular biology, cancer biology, and biotechnology techniques.
  • Interdisciplinary Biotech Collaboration: Collaboration with other departments such as nutrition, chemistry & biochemistry, mathematics, and geography strengthens students’ molecular, analytical, and quantitative skill sets.

AFTER GRADUATIng with a B.S. in Biology – Biotechnology Degree

Students in the biotechnology concentration graduate with the scientific training needed to develop medicinal, agricultural, and environmental products and to contribute to the rapidly expanding biotechnology sector.

UNCG biology alumni work at organizations such as Syngenta, LabCorp, the State of North Carolina, and the cities of Greensboro, Charlotte, and Burlington. Many continue their education at leading institutions including Duke University, Wake Forest University, NC State, East Carolina University, and universities across the UNC System.
