Bachelor's in Liberal and Interdisciplinary Studies - International and Global Human Rights

Advocate for human dignity, justice, and equality in an interconnected world. The International and Global Human Rights concentration in UNC Greensboro’s Bachelor of Liberal and Interdisciplinary Studies degree examines the foundations of freedom, justice, and peace through the study of human rights issues across diverse global contexts. You’ll explore the challenges affecting individuals and communities worldwide while gaining insight into the policies, institutions, and organizations that work to protect and advance human rights.

The Human Rights concentration is ideal for students interested in social justice, public service, and global engagement. This is one of six concentrations available through the International and Global Studies (IGS) program. Our interdisciplinary, liberal arts approach develops skills in research, critical thinking, and communication while preparing students to analyze complex international and global issues and understand the interconnectedness of world regions and populations.

International and Global Human Rights Concentration Highlights

• Examine human rights issues through an interdisciplinary lens. Study freedom, justice, peace, equality, and human dignity through coursework drawn from the humanities and social sciences.
• Explore the systems that protect human rights worldwide. Analyze how governments, nonprofit organizations, international agencies, and communities work to address human rights challenges.
• Develop skills for advocacy and global engagement. Strengthen your abilities in research, critical analysis, communication, and evaluating complex social and global issues.
• Customize your studies across disciplines. Build a broad understanding of human rights through courses in areas such as political science, sociology, history, anthropology, public health, economics, and foreign languages. Human rights courses span more than 30 departments and programs across campus.
• Join a program recognized for academic excellence and global engagement. Students regularly earn membership in Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Beta Delta, complete UNCG’s Global Leadership Program, and compete for prestigious opportunities such as Fulbright research and teaching awards and U.S. State Department Critical Language Scholarships.

THE International and Global Human Rights STUDENT EXPERIENCE

• Examine human rights issues through research and real-world application. Coursework explores topics such as social justice, migration, conflict, inequality, public policy, and human dignity in local and global contexts.
• Complete a meaningful senior research project. Work closely with a faculty mentor to investigate a human rights issue related to your academic and professional interests.
• Study abroad and develop intercultural competence. International study abroad experiences help you engage with diverse cultures while gaining a broader understanding of global human rights challenges.
• Strengthen your language and cross-cultural communication skills. Complete advanced foreign language coursework that prepares you to communicate across linguistic and cultural boundaries.
• Connect classroom learning to community impact. Volunteer and internship opportunities with organizations serving refugee and immigrant communities provide valuable experience supporting human rights and social justice initiatives.

After graduating from UNC Greensboro with a concentration in International and Global Human Rights, you’ll be prepared to address issues of justice, equality, and human dignity in diverse professional settings. Through the study of human rights, public policy, social justice, and global issues, you’ll develop the research, communication, and analytical skills needed to make a meaningful impact in communities around the world.

Graduates work in public, private, nonprofit, educational, and international organizations that advance human rights and social change. Potential employers include the U.S. Department of State, Amnesty International, AmeriCorps, Peace Corps, Booz Allen Hamilton, and the German Marshall Fund.
