Bachelor's in Liberal and Interdisciplinary Studies - Russian Studies

Explore the histories, cultures, and contemporary issues shaping Russia and Eastern Europe. The Russian Studies concentration in UNC Greensboro’s Bachelor of Liberal and Interdisciplinary Studies degree examines the region through the study of history, politics, economics, literature, film, religion, and culture. You’ll gain deeper insight into a region that continues to influence global affairs while developing regional expertise and cross-cultural understanding.

The Russian Studies concentration is one of six concentrations available through the International and Global Studies (IGS) program. Our interdisciplinary, liberal arts approach develops skills in research, critical thinking, and communication while preparing students to analyze complex international issues and understand the interconnectedness of world regions and populations.

Russian Studies Concentration Highlights

• Explore Russia and Eastern Europe through an interdisciplinary lens. Study the histories, cultures, politics, economies, languages, and societies that have shaped the region and continue to influence global affairs.
• Examine a region of enduring geopolitical importance. Analyze issues such as political change, international relations, cultural identity, economic development, and regional security.
• Develop regional expertise and intercultural skills. Strengthen your research, communication, critical thinking, and cross-cultural understanding while exploring diverse perspectives and experiences.
• Customize your studies across disciplines. Build a broad understanding of Russia and Eastern Europe through coursework in history, political science, geography, economics, languages, literature, religion, film, and cultural studies. Courses span more than 30 departments and programs across campus.
• Join a program recognized for academic excellence and global engagement. Students regularly earn membership in Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Beta Delta, complete UNCG’s Global Leadership Program, and compete for prestigious opportunities such as Fulbright research and teaching awards and U.S. State Department Critical Language Scholarships.

THE Russian Studies STUDENT EXPERIENCE

• Build expertise through independent research. Complete a senior research project focused on Russia, Eastern Europe, or an issue related to the region with guidance from UNCG faculty.

After graduating from UNC Greensboro with a concentration in Russian Studies, you’ll be prepared to apply regional knowledge, intercultural competence, and strong analytical skills in a variety of professional settings.
