Michael Burns

Michael Burns (bassoon) is Associate Professor of bassoon at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and is a Yamaha Performing Artist. He holds the B.M. degree from the Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, the M.M. from the New England Conservatory, and the D.M.A. from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Burns has performed in numerous professional orchestras including the Cincinnati and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestras and played Principal in the Midland/Odessa, Richmond and Abilene Symphonies, and the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra. He currently performs principal bassoon with the Asheville Symphony, the Opera Company of North Carolina, the Fibonacci Chamber Orchestra, and the Carolina Ballet. He also performs regularly with the North Carolina, Greensboro, and Charlotte Symphonies. Prior to UNCG, Burns taught at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory, Indiana State University, and Midland College. In addition he remains active as a solo and chamber performer as bassoonist in the EastWind Trio d'Anches the Blue Mountain Ensemble and the Cascade Quintet with numerous performances at International Double Reed Society conventions, recitals and masterclasses throughout North America, Germany, China and the South Pacific. He has recorded for the Centaur, CAP, Telarc, EMI, Klavier, and Mark labels and has a new solo CD Prima Vera: Music for Bassoon and Piano by Bassoonists due to be released in mid 2009 on the Mark Custom label. In summers, Burns is associated with the Eastern Music Festival and the Bands of America Summer Symposium. He is also an active composer with many of his pieces being published by TrevCo Music and frequently performed throughout the country and internationally. Burns has published articles and reviews in the Double Reed (the journal of the International Double Reed Society), the TBA Journal (Texas Bandmasters’ Association), the NC Music Educator (journal of the NC Music Educator's Association for which he serves as Woodwind Notes Editor), Notes (the journal of the Music Library Association) and on the Yamaha Educator Series online. His mentors include William Winstead, Sherman Walt, Leonard Sharrow, and Colin Hemmingsen. He is archivist for the International Double Reed Society and was co-host for the IDRS 2003 Conference in Greensboro, NC.
