The UNCG School of Nursing has received one of the top national honors for nursing schools.
The National League of Nursing named the school a Center of Excellence in Nursing Education, a distinction held by only three other schools in the country this year. The award was presented at the Oct. 1 National League for Nursing Education Summit in Baltimore. More than 1,400 nurse educators attended the conference.
“A deliberate program of professional development, sustained over several years helps faculty balance scholarship, teaching and service responsibilities at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro School of Nursing,” the League of Nursing said in announcing the honor. “The school encourages creative approaches to teaching and learning, the utilization of evidence-based teaching practices, purposeful mentoring and use of a master teaching model and implementation of a well-developed peer-review system.”
The Center of Excellence program was initiated in 2004 to acknowledge schools that provide an excellent nursing education, according to Dr. Ruth Corcoran, CEO of the National League of Nursing. The designation is a three-year distinction held by only a handful of schools across the country.
The three other schools given this honor are: Exelsior College in Albany, NY; Samford University in Birmingham, Ala.; and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
“We place a high priority on faculty development and understand its importance in shaping the educational program for students,” said Dr. Lynne Pearcey, dean and professor in the school. “There is a sense of connectedness among faculty, leavened by support from students, alumni, benefactors and administration.”
The UNCG School of Nursing offers degrees at all academic levels – bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of 1,300 and a graduate enrollment of 306, which includes doctoral students. The UNCG School of Nursing launched a new doctoral program this year with 12 students in the first year.
