A self-proclaimed “big nerd,” Theo Noussi is fascinated by nanoscience, which requires the use of sophisticated microscopy to study at a very small scale. Noussi, in his fifth year of a doctoral program in the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering (JSNN) at UNCG, is a native of Cameroon and the youngest of eight children. He came to the United States six years ago to earn a master’s degree in earth science, with a specialization in environmental science, at North Carolina Central University.

The voting rate for young people is on the rise, and UNCG’s rate is among the highest in the nation. Seventy-four percent of the student body voted in the 2020 election. The students, faculty, and staff behind the UNCG Votes Initiative worked to keep that rate up for the 2022 midterm elections.

“Along with his prior gift, six volleyball scholarships are funded by Jim’s generous giving,” according to UNCG Athletic Director Brian Mackin. James Dutton passed away on October 23. With a $2.2 million planned gift this fall, coupled with a $1.6 million planned gift announced earlier this year, his impact on the lives of future UNCG student-athletes will be incalculable.

More than 186 high school and college students from 18 counties across the state registered for UNCG’s first-ever Spartan Clash esports tournament. The top 45 qualifiers came to campus for a chance to show off their Fornite skills, meet other competitive esports athletes, and experience the 3,300-square-foot UNCG Esports Arena and Learning Lab firsthand.
