The BLS Degree Curriculum: Overview

The BLS Major

The BLS major includes core courses, distribution and concentration requirements and a capstone seminar, all of which are aimed specifically at demonstrating interconnections among disciplines in the Humanities, increasing the student's ability to think critically and analytically, enhancing the student's awareness of the role of the Humanities in contemporary society and improving written communication skills.

BLS Core Courses (6 Semester Hours)

Two core seminars. One must be completed during the first year in the program. One should carry the Speaking Intensive marker.

  • BLS 300 Seminar in the Humanities — Interdisciplinary online seminar designed to introduce students to substantive concerns in the Humanities and methods of investigation they employ. May be repeated for credit when topics vary.

BLS Distribution Requirements (12 Semester Hours)

One course from each of the four Selected Topics areas.

  • BLS 320 Selected Topics: Literature — Online course that examines selected topics in world literature exploring works of prose and/or poetry from diverse cultural traditions and periods. May be repeated for credit when topics vary.
  • BLS 340 Selected Topics: Fine Arts — Online course that examines selected topics in the fine arts exploring the aims and methods of artistic expression and the role of cultural traditions and artistic values in human society. May be repeated for credit when topics vary.
  • BLS 360 Selected Topics: Philosophy, Religion & Ethics — Online course that examines selected topics in philosophy, religion, and ethics; compares assumptions, modes of thought, and attendant practices, and analyzes their effects on behavior and human society. May be repeated for credit when topics vary.
  • BLS 380 Selected Topics: Historical Perspectives — Online course that examines selected topics in history and explores the context of events (social structure, economics, political systems, culture, or beliefs) in a specific region and period. May be repeated for credit when topics vary.

BLS Area of Emphasis (9 Semester Hours)

Three additional courses in one of the Selected Topics areas listed above. Selected courses may be used to meet any needed Writing Intensive markers.

BLS Capstone Seminar (3 Semester Hours)

Must be completed during the last semester in the program. Carries the Writing Intensive marker.

  • BLS 400 Senior Seminar — Online capstone experience for majors. Students compile web portfolio of work from classes in the major. Course serves as a method of assessment for majors.

BLS Electives

May be taken as desired, to meet university residency and upper-division course requirements.

UNCG Requirements for a Bachelor's Degree

In addition to the BLS Major, all students must also complete the requirements for a Bachelor of Arts degree under the College of Arts and Sciences.
