Policy on Approaching Foundations

In order to avoid potential conflicts with the university development office, faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences who intend to submit a proposal for research funding to a foundation should take the following steps:

  1. Discuss their plans with the Associate Dean for Research before contacting the foundation.
  2. If it appears that the approach is properly viewed as a gift, or if it involves one of the foundations from which the University solicits gifts, the Associate Dean will refer the faculty member to the corporate and foundation relations contact in the development office.
  3. If the approach is for research and does not involve a foundation with which the University is working on a gift solicitation, faculty should follow the same “green folder” process that obtains with all other research proposals.
