Science Education:
Classroom Practice Track

Designed for:

Students with an undergraduate degree in a science field (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) or related area and who wish to pursue to combined masters degree in education and teaching licensure for Science Education (grades 9-12).

Program Description:

The Master of Education (Classroom Practice Track) program is designed to prepare excellent science teachers for high school. The program enhances science teaching capacity by providing knowledge and clinical experience of science content, methods, and assessments with diverse student populations. University and clinical faculty are committed to teacher education and development.

Application Process:

Apply online through the UNCG Graduate School website where you can find additional information.

  • You will need one official transcript from every college and university you have attended, including UNCG.
  • Three recommendations are required from former professors and employers. These can be completed online or submitted in sealed envelopes.
  • A Residency Statement is required for applicants claiming North Carolina residency.
  • Applicants must take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and submit their test scores to the Graduate School. These should not be more than five years old.
  • Applicants for this program are required to submit a personal statement and a copy of an updated resume.
  • All of the above application materials listed above must be received by the Graduate School no later than April 1st for admission to the next cohort. Failure to meet this deadline will very likely mean you will have to wait for another year to begin this program.

Pre-requisites/Co-requisites:

  • Bachelor's degree in science or a related field
  • GPA and GRE scores that meet Graduate School standards
  • HEA 201 or equivalent
  • TED 535
  • TED 120 or equivalent

Program of Study

Core: (9 hours)

  • TED 669 Educational Implications of Learning and Developmental Theory (3), or TED 622 - Differentiated Instruction
  • TED 545 Diverse Learners, (3), or TED 646- Intro to Equity Education (3)
  • ERM 605 - Educational Measurement and Evaluation, (3) or ERM 604- Methods of Educational Research (3),

Pedagogical/Content Knowledge Expertise: (15 hours)

  • TED 559 (3) Teaching Practices & Curriculum in Science
  • TED 623 (3) Environmental Education
  • ED 561 (3) Nature of Science, Technology & Society
  • TED 632 (3) Science Education: Teaching practices and curriculum
  • 1 three- hour content course in College of Arts and Sciences

Professional Development/Leadership: (12 hours)

  • TED 638 (3) Seminar in Secondary Education
  • TED 680a (3) Clinical Experience in Teaching
  • TED 680b (3) Clinical Experience in Teaching Seminar

Licensure Process:

  • Successful completion of Technology Portfolio
  • Successful completion of Advanced Competencies Portfolio
  • Application for licensure through UNCG Certification Officer.
