African American Studies

Post-Baccalaureate Certificate, African American Studies
Students in the program will be introduced to intellectual and professional, historical and political origins and foundations of African American Studies in the United States. They will compare different methodologies of research and interpretation within the field and discuss the practical application of these theories and concepts. The 15-hour program will provide cohesiveness, mentorship and support to students wishing to pursue African American Studies at the graduate level.

Business Administration

Post-Baccalaureate Certificate, Business Foundations
The purpose of this certificate is to provide professionals who have a bachelor’s degree in a non-business field the opportunity to acquire education in business administration without committing to the lengthier MBA program.

Community and Therapeutic Recreation

Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Animal Assisted Therapy
The 15 credit hour Certificate program provides the knowledge and skills necessary to use Animal Assisted Therapy as an intervention to motivate, enhance skills, and promote health and optimal well-being. Currently the demand for quality Animal Assisted Therapy professionals is far greater than the supply of trained individuals. Our certificate program will provide the training and skills essential for successful application of Animal Assisted Therapy in a variety of settings: hospitals, long term care, mental health, schools, and others.

Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Geriatric Recreational Therapy
The 15 credit hour Certificate program gives insight into older adults, the fastest growing segment of the US population, and people are living longer than ever before. Most recreational therapists will encounter older adults in their practice, yet very few health professionals receive any formal education or training in gerontology or geriatrics.

Conflict Studies and Dispute Resolution

Post Baccalaureate Certificate in Conflict Resolution
The 18 credit hour Certificate program prepares students for the changing nature of professions, businesses, and community services. The Certificate program is beneficial for those who have already received a graduate degree in their current area, but would like to specialize in conflict resolution as a new area of specialization.

Education

Post-Baccalaureate Certificate for NC TEACH Alternative Licensure
NC TEACH is an alternative licensure program designed to recruit, train, support, and retain highly qualified individuals with undergraduate degrees in fields other than education who seek to enter the teaching profession. The Teachers Academy administers the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate for NC TEACH Alternative Licensure in the following areas: Middle Grades (6-9) Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies; Secondary (9-12) English, Latin, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies; and K-12 Foreign Language (Spanish or French). Depending on the academic background of the student, the certificate program consists of 12-18 semester hours. Students in the program enroll in a sequence of education courses and engage in field-based experiences as lateral entry teachers in local public school systems or, in some cases, as student teachers. Students may be required to take additional course work in their teaching area for licensure.

Educational Leadership and Cultural Foundations

Post-Master's Certificate, School Administration
The Post-Master’s Certificate in School Administration (PMC) is designed to meet the requirements of North Carolina state legislation that supports an alternative path to school administration licensure. It is intended for students who already hold a Master’s degree in Education or in a field that works closely with youth and adult development. PMC requirements include 12-15 hours of classroom courses drawn from those required in the Department’s Master’s of School Administration degree program. Students must also complete 12 hours of an individualized Internship experience in an authentic educational administration setting. Students must apply to the UNCG Graduate School for graduation and submit an approved Plan of Study. Students interested in state certification must successfully meet all PMC and state administrator assessment requirements before applying for state school administration licensure.

Post-Master’s Certificate in Urban School Leadership and Administration The Post-Master’s Certificate in Urban School Leadership and Administration is designed to prepare students for positions as principals or assistant principals in urban schools. The certificate meets the requirements of the state legislation that supports an alternative path to school administration licensure (also known as “add-on” principal licensure). Students must complete 27 semester hours, including 15 semester hours of academic course work and 12 semester hours of a year-long internship conducted in an urban educational setting.

Educational Research Methodology

Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Educational Assessment
The Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Educational Assessment requires 15 semester hours and provides school district testing coordinators or school administrators the opportunity to acquire focused education in educational assessment and evaluation.

Entrepreneurship

The Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Entrepreneurship is designed to give professionals the opportunity to gain valuable entrepreneurial knowledge and skills to create a new venture, to grow an existing venture, or to be more creative and innovative in any organization. The certificate is built on the basic building blocks of the feasibility analysis and business plan in either an independent business or existing business and specializes in seven areas of choice: creative industries, family business, franchising, healthcare, international, social, and technology and innovation.

Geography

Post-Baccalaureate Certificate, Geographic Information Science
The purpose of the certificate is to provide professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively utilize spatial analytic tools, geographic data visualization techniques, spatial programming, and geographic information and image processing software. The certificate program emphasizes the application of Geographic Information Science in the fields of urban and regional planning, environmental assessment, remote sensing, spatial software development, cartography, and economic development.

Post-Baccalaureate Certificate, Global and Regional Studies Geography
The Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Global and Regional Studies Geography emphasizes knowledge and skills needed to prepare students to work in positions in government, international business, and global non-profit organizations. Courses focus on the contemporary political economy of countries in various global regions from East Asia to Europe. The program requires 18 semester hours of course work.

Gerontology

Post-Baccalaureate Certificate, Gerontology
This program incorporates theoretical principles and practical applications. It is rigorous, in that it includes attention to the foundations of aging processes, and flexible, because it permits students to customize their coursework according to their individual interests and academic background.

The certificate provides graduate students training and credentials to pursue careers in history museums, historic preservation, cultural resource management, management of historic sites, and related public history professions.

Human Development and Family Studies

Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Leadership in Early Care & Education
The target audiences for this certificate are: 1) individuals who currently hold a Bachelor's degree in early childhood settings that are required to obtain additional training, especially early childhood teachers, program directors, Smart Start Personnel, and early intervention personnel; and 2) Community College faculty who currently teach early care and education courses, hold either a Bachelor's or a Master's degree, and are now required to obtain 18 hours of training in their discipline in order to continue their employment.

Information Systems and Operations Management

Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Supply Chain, Logistics, and Transportation Management
This program will provide knowledge on the integration of activities from sourcing of materials, production, distribution and delivery to final consumers, and the use of enabling information technologies to achieve the integration of those activities. Individuals completing the program will have a greater understanding on supply chain and logistics issues, decision models and tools, information technologies with immediate applications in supply chain analysis, process improvement, cost control, revenue enhancement and customer satisfaction.

Post-Master’s Certificate, Information Technology
The purpose of this certificate is to provide professionals who already have an MBA or related graduate degree with state-of-the-art knowledge and skills in the application of information technology to the solution of organizational problems.

Post-Baccalaureate Certificate, Information Technology
The purpose of this certificate is to provide professionals who already have a bachelor's degree in any field from an accredited institution with state-of-the-art knowledge and skills in the application of information technology to the solution of organizational problems.

Post-Baccalaureate Certificate, Information Assurance, Security and Privacy
This certificate is intended for professionals who already have a bachelor’s degree in any field to gain state-of-the-art knowledge and skills in all aspects of information security and privacy technologies, tools, methodologies and management. This certificate provides an innovative and relevant educational opportunity that reflects the changing information security and privacy environment of the 21st century by incorporating the latest thinking and best practices in the field with a solid foundation in theory and proven principles.

Languages, Literatures & Cultures

Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Advanced Spanish Language and Hispanic Cultural Studies
Designed for professionals who may have a bachelor's degree in a field other than Spanish but who are able to demonstrate strong intermediate-level language skills in Spanish (equivalent to having completed a minimum of 21 undergraduate semester hours above the 204 level). Specific goals of the certificate program are: 1) to increase students' language skills in Spanish to a high level; 2) to prepare qualified candidates for cross-cultural professions; and 3) to prepare community college, four-year college or university instructors who, according to accreditation guidelines, must have at least 18 hours of graduate credit in order to teach Spanish (and would thus need to take one additional course beyond the certificate).

Liberal Studies

Post-Baccalaureate Certificate, Global Studies
This certificate program seeks to instill in students a knowledge of particular cultures, while also providing training in the analysis of global trends. Students will learn how to make connections between their knowledge of a particular part of the world and the larger trends and issues that affect all societies. Certificate holders will be prepared for positions in government, non-profit, or corporate venues that involve global awareness and decision-making.

Mathematics

Post-Baccalaureate Certificate, Statistics
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers a graduate program of study leading to a 14 hour Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in statistics. The purpose of the certificate is to provide statistical training for persons who wish to enhance their knowledge of statistics but do not wish to pursue a formal degree, and is intended for professionals whose interests require a knowledge of statistics beyond the undergraduate level. The objective of the certificate is to offer a structured introduction to the basic ideas of graduate level statistical analysis.

Music

Post-Master’s Certificate in Ethnomusicology
Within the PhD or DMA program, a student may elect a Post-Master’s Certificate in Ethnomusicology (15 hours). The purpose is to provide post-master’s professionals with knowledge and skills needed to apply principles of ethnomusicology to a variety of musical careers. In addition to gaining awareness of a wide variety of musical traditions, the certificate will prepare students to teach introductory courses in world music and ethnomusicology.

Post-Master's Certificate, Music Theory Pedagogy (within the Ph.D. or D.M.A.)
Within the Ph.D. or D.M.A. programs a student may elect a Post-Master's Certificate in music theory pedagogy (14 hours). The purpose is to provide the student with knowledge and skills necessary to be successful teaching music theory and ear training in higher education.

Nutrition

Post-Baccalaureate Certificate, Dietetic Internship
Upon completion of the Dietetic Internship program, students will: a) demonstrate performance competencies in clinical, administrative, and community dietetics; b) have practice skills to function as members of health care teams providing direct patient care; c) demonstrate self direction and problem solving skills in dietetic practice; and d) be eligible to take the American Dietetic Association's national registration examination to become a registered dietitian (R.D.)

Political Science/Public Affairs

Post-Baccalaureate Certificate, Nonprofit Management
Certificate graduates will be prepared for management positions in the nonprofit sector, including positions in human service agencies, foundations, or professional associations. The certificate program could prove to be useful to government and business professionals as well, especially if they have significant voluntary or nonprofit agency responsibilities.

Post-Baccalaureate Certificate, Urban and Economic Development
A concentration in the Master of Public Affairs program and a joint certificate program with the Department of Geography have been approved
for Fall 2004. The 15-hr. concentration is titled Community
and Economic Development, and the 18-hr. joint certificate
program is titled Urban and Economic Development.

Teacher Education and Higher Education

Post-Baccalaureate Certificate for Special Endorsement in Computer Education
The Post-Baccalaureate Certificate for Special Endorsement in Computer Education requires 18 semester hours and is offered jointly by the departments of Library and Information Studies and Teacher Education and Higher Education. The certificate provides educators with extensive knowledge and skills to work with students and other teachers to use computers in on-going instructional programs and to serve as a computer education leader for a school. Completion of the certificate provides NC licensed teachers the opportunity to fulfill requirements to apply for the NC endorsement for the position of Technology Facilitator.

Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language
This certificate program is designed to develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to help language-minority adults and children understand, speak, read and write English, thus preparing them to function better in American Society.

Women's and Gender Studies

Post-Baccalaureate Certificate, Women’s and Gender Studies
Holders of the certificate are prepared for interdisciplinary teaching and for careers in nonprofit, governmental and corporate venues. The certificate program also serves as post-baccalaureate study that prepare students for entry into professional degree programs in such fields as law, child development and public health.
