Graduate Students

I have been advising graduate students for many years. All my previous advisees have been successful in their study in graduate schools and current careers. I always give the highest priority to educating students. If you are interested in children/adolescents' motivation to learn in physical education, evidence-based best teaching practices, and curriculum innovation for children/adolescents to develop healthful living knowledge and behavior, I encourage you to contact me directly at a_chen@uncg.edu or (336) 256-8566. I look forward to your contribution to the success of our graduate program.

If you are currently holding a bachelor's degree, you can start your graduate study with our Master of Science (MS) degree program. Graduates from the MS program can choose to pursue their career full time after graduation. But, if your goal is to pursue a career in higher education or program administration / supervision, you are strongly encouraged to go on to enroll in our Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) or Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programs in order to ensure the continuation of your education efficiently. Detailed degree requirements can be found in the Department of Kinesiology website.

Our Pedagogical Kinesiology Lab offers research assistantships to qualified full-time graduate students to join our NIH funded research team. The Department of Kinesiology offers teaching assistantships (stipends, tuition waivers, or both) to qualified graduate students. The Graduate School offers fellowship to qualified graduate students on a competitive basis. You are strongly encouraged to apply for these assistantships. Please feel free to contact me if you have questions about assistantships, I will be more than glad to assist you in the process.

Graduate students who study with me will follow an individualized program of study that you and I will determine together. The program of study will guide you to reach your career goal. Because of this individualized approach, I appreciate you sharing your career goals and/or plans with me as early as you can so we will be able to develop your program of study effectively. Admission decision takes into account your performance in your undergraduate program (for MS) or master's program (for Ed.D. or Ph.D.), GRE scores, your professional goals, and recommendations from your previous mentors.

If English is not your native language, you are required to provide TOEFL scores to demonstrate your mastery of the English language for graduate studies. You can find detailed application information and admission criteria at the UNCG Graduate School website. Again, if you have questions, please feel free to contact me.
