Preparing Educational Interpreters

The Department of Specialized Eduction Services has received two grants, one to prepare educational interpreters over four years at UNCG, and the other to prepare students to become educational interpreters over three summers at UNCG. Both awards are from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Preparation. The former grant award covers a five year period from September 1, 2000 through August 31, 2005, and the latter covers the period from August 1, 1999 through July 31, 2002.

The program at UNCG is a four year program leading to a Bachelor of Science degree in Special Education from the Department of Specialized Education Services. The curriculum follows the guidelines recommended by the Joint Educational Interpreting Committee of the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and the Council on Education of the Deaf. Students complete 129 hours of course work including field experiences and practicum. Students have completed practicum experiences in Jamaica, Washington, DC, England, and Alaska. Stipends are available for eligible students in the amount of $3,000 per semester, and are generally awarded during their junior and senior years. Each semester award requires the recipient to work as an educational interpreter for one year.

The summer program at UNCG in educational interpreting is articulated with the student's home institution where he/she receives his/her degree. Each student follows a course of study meeting the guidelines of the Joint Educational Interpreting Committee of the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and the Council on Education of the Deaf as closely as the curriculum at his/her institution allows. During three summers the student takes two courses a summer (four weeks) in educational interpreting (a total of six courses). Course work at the student's home institution includes field experiences and practicum. Stipends are available for eligible students in the amount of $1,500 per summer with housing and tuition paid separately through the grant. Each summer's award requires the recipient to work as an educational interpreter for one year. Both programs encourage individuals with disabilities and those from underrepresented groups to apply.
