Candidates for the Undergraduate Programs receive an individualized program of study that lists the education and content (teaching area) courses that are required for licensure area. In some cases, candidates have already completed a relevant degree in their future teaching area and will have few, if any, content courses to take. In other cases, candidates will have a number of content courses to take in additional to their education courses. The program of study is developed after the licensure program advisor reviews the candidate’s academic and professional background.
In most cases the Alternative Licensure Advisor meets with candidates to give them information about their programs. Departmental advisors are consulted as well.
Candidates apply for North Carolina Standard Professional I teaching licensure after
• completing their program of study, which includes a teaching portfolio,
• receiving passing scores on the PRAXIS II teaching examination in the teaching field, and
• successfully completing at least one year of lateral entry teaching.
