You must RSVP for the School of Education, (SOE) Diploma ceremony by Friday, April 17, 2009. If you have RSVP’ed for the university commencement ceremony, you will need to complete an additional RSVP to attend the SOE Diploma Ceremony.

There is no rehearsal for the School of Education Diploma Recognition Ceremony, which is coordinated by the Office of the Associate Dean for Operations. If you have questions or concerns, please contact:

PRIOR TO THE CEREMONY:

Caps and Gowns – Order by April 15, 2009 All participants must be dressed in full academic regalia. This includes cap, gown, and tassel. Please contact the University Book Store to place your orders.

PARKING AND GUEST INFORMATION:

Parking and Tickets Parking and attendance will be free of charge with no required passes or tickets for students and/or guests. Guest Seating Guests may arrive with the graduate or just prior to the beginning of the ceremony. This is not a ticketed event, so seating is on a first come, first served basis. The earlier guests arrive, the better chance they have of getting the seats they prefer. Doors will open for seating at 5:00pm.

This is a very special day for you and your family/friends. We hope everyone enjoys the event. However, please keep in mind that small children and babies may cause a distraction during the ceremony.

INSTRUCTIONS AND OVERVIEW FOR MAY 15th CEREMONY:

Assembling Prior to Ceremony – Be there at 5:00pm on Friday, May 15th! All graduation participants, dressed in full academic regalia, must meet in the foyer of the Special Events Center NO LATER than 5:00pm. ALL GRADUATES MUST SIGN IN AT THE REGISTRATION TABLE. In order to ensure a place in the graduation lineup, you must register and receive a name card. Keep this name card with you throughout the ceremony! When you cross the stage, you will hand this name card to the Chair of the SOE Faculty Assembly, Dr. Carl Lashley and he will read your name as you are receiving your diploma cover.

Processional, Welcome and Introduction Graduates will be lined up by order in which they will march. Ceremony marshals will lead the graduates to their seats. Remain standing until directed by Dean Schunk to be seated. Dean Schunk will welcome the graduates, faculty, and guests and provide a short introduction into the program. A guest speaker will give the ceremony address. After the ceremony address Dean Schunk will step to the podium, thank the guest speaker, welcome graduates to the profession of education and announce the awarding of diplomas.

Graduate Recognition – Don’t forget your card! Diploma covers will be awarded directly thereafter. A ceremony marshal will direct graduates to the stage. Beginning with the first row, graduates will exit their seats to the right. One row at a time, they will approach the stage from the right side. Subsequent rows of graduates will remain seated until directed to the stage by a ceremony marshal. Remember to bring your name card with you when you approach the stage. When your name is called, approach the Dean to receive his congratulations. Accept the diploma cover with your left hand and use your right hand to shake hands with the Dean of the School of Education. A ceremony marshal will direct you back to your seat.

YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE YOUR DIPLOMA ON GRADUATION DAY! You will receive your diploma cover at the ceremony. Your diploma will be sent to you by mail, to your (permanent address) that the Registrar’s office has on file, after all degree clearances are completed by the university.

Pictures As each graduate is handed his/her diploma, a picture will be taken by a professional photographer. You will receive an email from the photographer with a link to their website, www.photospecialties.com, and a password that allows you to view and order your graduation photos online. A free color proof will also be mailed to your permanent address so that you will have the opportunity to purchase these prints. You are under no obligation to purchase prints. If you do not receive a proof within a week of the ceremony, please email info@photospecialties.com or call 1-800-722-7033.

Recessional After the singing of the Alma Mater, graduates will be instructed to stand and a ceremony marshal will direct each row of graduates out of the auditorium. Faculty members will be present in the lobby to meet with graduates and their guests.

SPECIAL SERVICES

Marshals wearing gold corsages with ribbon will be stationed throughout the Special Events Center to assist graduates and their guests. Reserved seating will be available for guests with restricted mobility. Reserved seating and an interpreter for the deaf and hard of hearing will also be available.

Directions to the Greensboro Coliseum Complex including the Arena, Special Events Center, and War Memorial Auditorium:

I-85 South/I-40 West From Burlington, Durham, Raleigh I-40 West to Greensboro, take Exit 218-B, Freeman Mill Road. Go 1/4 mile and turn left on Coliseum Boulevard. The Complex is two miles on the left.

I-85 North from Charlotte I-85 North to Greensboro, take Exit 122-B, Freeman Mill Road (clover-leaf). Go 1 1/2 miles and turn left on Coliseum Boulevard. The Complex is two miles on the left.

I-40 East from Winston-Salem I-40 East to Greensboro, take Exit 216 towards UNCG and continue straight ahead for two miles to the Complex.

Highway 220 North from Asheboro Highway 220 North to Greensboro turns into Freeman Mill Road. Stay on Freeman Mill Road. After crossing I-85 and I-40, turn left onto Coliseum Boulevard. The Complex is two miles on the left.

Highway 220 South from Virginia On Highway 220 South to Greensboro, road name changes to Battleground Ave in the city. After crossing Cornwallis, keep right onto Westover Terrace. Continue straight on Westover Terrace, which becomes Aycock Street. Continue straight for three miles. Cross Spring Garden Street, pass under the railroad bridge and turn right at the next light on Lee Street (Wendy's on the right). The Complex is one mile on the left. Turn left onto Coliseum Boulevard.

Through Town Directions from Piedmont Triad International Airport: Leave the airport and turn right on Bryan Boulevard. Go eight miles and turn right on Aycock S treet. Continue straight for two miles. Cross Spring Garden Street, pass under the railroad bridge, and turn right at the next light on Lee Street (Wendy's on the right). The Complex is one mile on the left. Turn left onto Coliseum Boulevard.

Highway Directions from Piedmont Triad International Airport: Leave the airport and turn left on Bryan Boulevard to Highway 68 South. Follow 68 South to I-40. Go under the bridge and take I-40 East to Greensboro. Take Exit 216 towards UNCG and continue straight ahead for two miles to the Complex.
