The CASTL Institutional Leadership Program builds on the influential work undertaken by colleges and universities, campus centers and educational organizations, scholarly and professional societies, and CASTL Campus Program Leadership Clusters, to facilitate collaboration among institutions with demonstrated commitment to and capacity for action, inquiry and innovation in the scholarship of teaching and learning. Participating institutions are organized to address specific themes important to the improvement of student learning, as well as the development and sustainability of a scholarship of teaching and learning.
The University of North Carolina CASTL project is addressing the Leadership Theme - System-Wide Collaboration Supporting Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. The proposal submitted to the Carnegie Foundation CASTL Leadership Program from UNC was titled – Building a Foundation for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning: Collaboration in the University of North Carolina.

CASTL/UNC Teaching and Learning with Technology Collaborative Course Redesign Partnership
Since 2004, campuses of The University of North Carolina have participated in the National Center for Academic Transformation Course Redesign efforts and are using lessons learned to redesign additional courses.. The University of North Carolina Teaching and Learning with Technology Collaborative (TLTC) has promoted and supported such efforts, and this past academic year awarded grants to nine campuses to fund new redesign efforts. Currently, forty-five courses are being redesigned with two of these redesigned courses being offered in the summer of 2007, twenty-eight redesigned courses being piloted in the fall of 2007 and fifteen additional redesigned courses scheduled to be piloted in the spring of 2008.
The UNC CASTL initiative is partnering with this UNC TLTC redesign initiative with the goal being to communicate and disseminate about the teaching and learning practices of these redesign efforts, and the effectiveness of various redesign strategies.
