Grab your castanets, well-heeled shoes and frilly skirts because flamenco’s coming to UNCG.

Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana will perform at UNCG at 8 p.m. Feb. 24 in Aycock Auditorium as part of the University Concert/Lecture Series. Tickets are $29, $25 or $19 for adults and $27, $23 or $17 for seniors, children or non-UNCG students. Reduced ticket prices are available for UNCG students.

Flamenco is an intense and dramatic dance that originated in the southern Spanish region of Andalucía. Known for its percussive steps, dramatic movements and vivid costumes, the traditional dance may be Spanish, but its origins are multicultural. Influenced by the rhythms of Northern Africa and even South America, flamenco’s roots extend throughout all of the cultures that inhabited and influenced southern Spain: Islamic Moors, Jewish culture, Spanish culture, and perhaps most importantly, Gypsy culture.

Its themes are the passionate concerns of the human condition: love, honor, sorrow and death. Dance Magazine designated Carlota Santana’s dance group the “keeper of flamenco” for its efforts to keep this dramatic dance form alive.

Founded in 1983 in New York, Flamenco Vivo has since relocated to Durham. During its tenure in New York, the New York Times called it “One of New York’s most skilled and enterprising Spanish dance troupes.” The Washington Post called Flamenco Vivo “intense, vivid.” And the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette wrote that “These dancers broke open like flames dancing along the stage, with outright fireworks for the tableaux finale.” In addition to national performance tours, the troupe offers an arts-in-education program, dance classes and workshops.

Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana comes to UNCG as part of the UC/LS, which includes the upcoming final performance, the modern dance troupe MOMIX performing “Passion”, which features the music of Peter Gabriel, on April 6. Click here for more information on UC/LS. For ticketing, contact the University Box Office and Arts Information Center on the first floor of Elliott University Center at 336-334-4TIX (4849). Online ticketing is also available.
