It’s National Transfer Student Week, and UNC Greensboro is celebrating this significant segment of its student body. For students looking for a new academic path, UNCG offers more than a place to transfer credits. Dedicated advising, transfer-specific programs, flexible learning options, and a welcoming campus community help students make UNCG their own.

UNCG transfers, by the numbers

About half of the Spartans who graduated since December 2025 began their UNCG journey as transfer students. A total of 1,694 out of 3,343 graduates found their way here from other schools and earned a UNCG degree, ready to make an impact in their chosen field.

Whether students transfer to UNCG to save money, find a better academic fit, or pursue a college experience that better suits their lives, UNCG offers tailored resources to help them reach their goals.

In fall 2026, UNCG enrolled 5,933 new and continuing transfer students, the University’s highest transfer enrollment since the pandemic. This represents 39% of undergraduate enrollment. Many come from community colleges, with 44% earning an associate degree before transferring to UNCG for specific majors.

Transfer resources make a difference

Specialized advising helps students understand how their credits transfer so they can avoid retaking courses unnecessarily. For Naomi Fullerton, that support began before she enrolled. While attending Rockingham Community College (RCC), she connected with a UNCG recruitment officer who helped her map out the courses and credit hours she needed to transfer into UNCG’s Interpreting, Deaf Education, and Advocacy Services (IDEAS) program.

“After talking with the UNCG representative about my goals, they helped me create a plan and gave me a list of elective courses and credit hours I needed to complete in order to transfer to UNCG,” says Fullerton. “Having that guidance helped me feel more prepared for the transition to a four-year university.”

Once students are enrolled, they connect with Transfer Initiatives to get adjusted to campus life. Transfer Initiatives can guide them to campus housing dedicated to transfer students in the Connect Living Learning Community, the Transfer2Transfer mentoring program, transfer student organizations and specialized advising.

“Transfer students don’t always fit the traditional college student mold,” says Stewart Self, assistant director of Transfer Initiatives at UNCG. ” Forty-three percent of our current transfer student body is over 25 years old. Some are full-time employees or are caring for a child or family member. Online classes and flexible scheduling help them reach graduation.”

Dalyn Hutchens, a Kinesiology major who transferred from UNC Charlotte, is grateful for the resources she found at UNCG. “It was nice knowing there were resources specifically for transfer students and people available to help me adjust to a new university,” she says. “Transfer Initiatives really helped to make my transition easier. Now I’m in a program that is helping me grow and prepare for my future career.”

UNCG is holding special events to celebrate our transfer students this week. If you’re a transfer student, stop by and thank your team at Transfer Initiatives.

Spartan transfers find their fit

The number of Spartan transfer students who cross the stage each Commencement speaks volumes about the resources UNCG has established to help guide them to fulfilling careers.  Liz Rosso, an Interior Architecture major from Florida State College at Jacksonville, plans to join their ranks in May 2027.

“UNCG is a better fit for me because I have been able to pursue the major that I wanted, have grown as a student and person, and I have found a community of great people that I consider my second family,” she says. “UNCG was the best decision for me.”
